Wix alternatives: Squarespace, WordPress, Webflow and more

Short answer

Squarespace is the closest swap for a polished site with little upkeep. WordPress gives you full ownership if you can maintain it, Webflow suits design-led teams, and Shopify is the specialist for online stores. A custom-built site makes sense when speed, search and conversions drive revenue and you want to own the code.

When Wix is the right choice

A rebuild has to earn its cost. Stay on Wix if these are true.

  • Your site is a few pages and it already brings in the leads you need.
  • You edit it yourself every week and like the editor.
  • Wix apps already cover your bookings, store or blog, and they work.
  • Budget is tight and a rebuild would not pay for itself yet.

How OWNIT does it

A website you own

We design and build a fast, custom site around how your customers buy, then move your content, SEO and URLs across with redirects in place so you keep your rankings. You own the code and can host it anywhere. Our hosting and care plans are optional, and packages are fixed before any work starts.

See website pricing

You own

  • The right to hire any developer later

You still pay for

  • Domain renewal at your registrar
  • Changes after launch, unless they are in your care plan

Questions, answered

Short, straight answers. Anything else, ask us on a free call.

What is the best alternative to Wix?

For a polished site with little upkeep, Squarespace. For full ownership with a developer on hand, self-hosted WordPress. For design-led marketing sites, Webflow. For an online store, Shopify. If your site drives revenue and you want speed and ownership, a custom build.

Can I move my Wix site to WordPress?

Not directly. Wix sites run only on Wix’s servers, and Wix says blog posts can’t currently be exported to other platforms. Moving means rebuilding the site and copying content across, with redirects set up so you keep your search rankings.

Is Squarespace better than Wix?

Neither is better for everyone. Squarespace is known for polished templates and low upkeep, Wix for drag-and-drop freedom and its app market. Both host your site on their own platform, so compare pricing, store fees and how much you can export.

Is a custom website worth it for a small business?

It is worth it when your site has a job to do, such as winning calls, bookings or sales, and you plan to keep it for years. If your site is a simple online business card, a builder is usually enough.

Will I lose my Google rankings if I switch?

Not if the move is planned. Keep URLs where you can, add 301 redirects for the rest, carry over titles and descriptions, and resubmit your sitemap. Expect some movement for a few weeks during any migration.
