Your house was wired for a lamp and a radio.

A 1920s bungalow or two-flat came with a fuse box and a couple of outlets per room. Today it runs window units, a dishwasher, a home office and maybe a car. Old wiring rarely fails loudly. It warns you first.

An antique push-button light switch plate set into red Chicago-style brick
Push-button switches like this one still run lights in plenty of North Side two-flats.
  • Lights dim when the AC kicks on

The circuit is shared, or the service coming into the house is too small for how you live now.

  • Breakers trip, or you keep spare fuses

If there is a box of fuses by the basement stairs, your panel is overdue for a look.

  • Two-prong outlets and warm cover plates

No ground wire, or a loose connection heating up inside the box. Both are quick to check.

  • A buzz, a hot smell or scorch marks

Switch that circuit off at the panel and call (773) 555-0142. We answer around the clock.

Five kinds of work. One crew that does them every day.

  1. Panels and service upgrades

Fuse box or a tired 60 or 100 amp panel out, a 200 amp service in. We book the meter pull with ComEd and have you back on power the same day.

    Typical range $3,400 to $5,800

  2. EV chargers

Level 2 charging on its own circuit, in an attached garage or out to the alley. Tesla, Ford, Rivian, Hyundai: any J1772 or NACS charger.

Typical range $950 to $2,400 Check your panel

  3. Lighting

Recessed lights, pendants over the island, under-cabinet strips, and dimmers matched to the bulbs so nothing buzzes or flickers at 10 percent.

Typical range $240 to $340 a light Try the lighting lab

  4. Rewiring and knob-and-tube

Cloth-covered wire out, new circuits in, one floor at a time so you can keep living in the house. We patch the holes we make.

    Typical range $6,500 to $12,000 a floor

  5. Outlets, switches and small fixes

Dead outlets, GFCI in the bathroom, a switch that sparks, hardwired smoke and CO alarms. The service call is credited to the repair.

    Service call $129

Will your panel take an EV charger?

Answer four questions. You get the circuit you need, how fast it charges, whether a panel upgrade is likely, and a price range. It takes about 20 seconds.

Main panel size

It's printed on the main breaker at the top of the panel. A fuse box is usually 60 A.

Already electric in the house

On the walkthrough we confirm

  • A real load calculation, using a year of your bills if you have them
  • Space in the panel for a 2-pole breaker
  • The conduit route to where you actually park
  • Utility and federal rebates you may qualify for

Panel upgrade

Unlikely

Your panel should carry it with room to spare.

Chicago writes its own electrical code. We wire to it every day.

    • The quote is the price

Flat and written, before any work. If something changes, you approve it first, with a photo.

    • Permit pulled, inspection passed

We file it, book the city inspector and meet them. You get the signed permit for your records.

    • Photos before the walls close

Every new box and splice is photographed and sent to you, so the next owner knows what's inside.

    • We leave it clean

Drop cloths, a HEPA vacuum and patched holes. Two years on our workmanship.

Questions we get on every walkthrough.

    Do you pull the permit?

Yes, for every job that needs one. We file with the City of Chicago or your suburb, schedule the inspection and meet the inspector. The permit fee is already in your quote.

How long is the power off for a panel upgrade?

Usually six to eight hours on the day. We book the meter disconnect with ComEd and tell you the window in advance. Keep the fridge shut and it will be fine.

Will an EV charger need a panel upgrade?

Often not. The fit check above gives you a good first read. On site we do a proper load calculation, and a lower charger setting or a load manager can often avoid the upgrade.

My insurer flagged knob-and-tube. Can you help?

Yes. We trace what is still live, give you a written report with photos for the insurer, and quote replacement floor by floor so you don't have to move out.

What if you find something else once the wall is open?

We stop, send you a photo and a price, and wait for your yes. Nothing gets added to the bill without it.

Do I need to be home?

For the walkthrough, yes, or a tenant or neighbor who can let us in. On work days we only need access to the panel and the rooms we are working in.

    Are you licensed and insured?

Licensed electrical contractor with the City of Chicago (EC-5550618), bonded, and insured to $2 million. A supervising electrician signs off every job. Certificates on request.
